Professor Dr. Bikha Ram Devrajani is Pakistan’s famous Consultant Physician who currently has clinical and teaching experience of more than 35 years. He was a former Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences (LUMHS) Jamshore, Sindh’s oldest medical university.

Early Life & Family Background

Shree Dr. Bikha Ram Devrajani was born on March 1, 1962, in Googio, a small village in Taluka Chachro, District Tharparkar, Sindh, Pakistan. He belongs to the Shaashan/Nukh ‘Achoo’ of caste Suthar in Hinduism.

His father, the late Shree Harchand Rai was a farmer and carpenter in the village. Shree Harchand Rai married the daughter of Shree Thanaram Ji, son of Shree Dev Raj and they had 3 sons and 4 daughters, with Dr. Devrajani being the eldest son. Dr. Devrajani married twice in his life, first to the daughter of the Shree Narso Ji Asdey of Mithi.

Educational Career

Dr. Bikha Ram Devrajani received his primary education in his native village Goongio. In his primary school, he had the opportunity to study under Sir Muhammad Sawan Nohri, a renowned teacher of that era. There was no high school in Googlio village from which Dr. Devrajani could continue his studies. However, Dr. Bikha Ram had a dream of higher studies to achieve a successful professional career. After completing primary education he moved and lived in his maternal house in Tandojam, where he completed his Matriculation from Government High School Tandojam in 1977. He then passed Intermediate from Government Muslim Science College of Hyderabad in 1979.

Driven by his high spirit and zeal, he successfully gained admission to Liaquat Medical College (now Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences) in Jamshoro. There, he worked hard in his medical studies and finally achieved his dream by earning his MBBS degree in 1986.

Research Works

The major fields of interest of Dr. Devrajani are liver diseases, diabetes mellitus, and neurological disorders. He has published more than 170 research papers in national and International journals, earning over 1270 citations. He has presented at more than 37 national and international conferences including DDW, APASL, EASL, ADA, IDF, etc.

Dr. Devrajani serves as the Editor-in-Chief, JLUMHS & World Journal of Medical Sciences, Associate Editor-in-Chief of the Middle East Journal of Scientific Research, Co-Editor-in-Chief of Global Journal of Pharmacology, and Editorial Board Member of the World Applied Sciences Journal, World Journal of Hepatology. He is also a reviewer for more than 20 national and international journals. Due to his exceptional research work, two drugs; Pasio cosmetic formulations and another one have been synthesized. He has trained approximately 500 general practitioners in Sindh on the management of diabetes mellitus following the guidelines of the International Diabetes Center.

Dr. Devrajani also played a key role in framing the rules, regulations, and curriculum for M.Phil leading to Ph.D program. For his contribution In this regard, he was awarded one-month salary by the academic council. Additionally, he was involved in in the development of the curriculum for M.Sc. in Diabetes and Endocrinology and Diploma in Family Health Care. He was a member of the core committee that developed the curriculum for MBBS in 2011, as constituted by HEC and PMDC. Dr. Devrajani also served as a member of the Provincial Bioethical Committee (PBC). He was instrumental in establishing the Forensic DNA laboratory, the first of its kind in the Sindh province.

Achievements during Chancellorship

Dr. Devrajani after joining as Vice Chancellor of Liaqat University of Medical and Health Science, completed a record number of various development works during his tenure of 4 years (2017 to 2021). Some notable achievements during his chancellorship are listed below:

  • Recognition of Bilawal Medical College as a constituent Medical College of his University.
  • Approval of permission from the Government of Sindh for the affiliation of two hospitals with Bilawal Medical College.
  • Establishment of the Gastroenterology Unit, more than 2200 procedures performed at the Department of Gastroenterology. (Diagnostics & Therapeutics).
  • Establishment of 7 new branches of Diagnostic & Research Laboratories in Mithi, Tando Mohammad Khan, Tando Allahyar, Kotri, Kandiaro & Mehrapur.
  • Establishment of the College Of Technologists.
  • Initiation of 4-years program in Forensic Medicine
  • Establishment of the Advanced Diagnostic Center at university.
  • Planting more than 5000 plants at the university.
  • Initiation of Fellowship program (FCPS training) in Gastroenterology, approved by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan.
  • Reimbursement of 5.6 million rupees to students from funds provided by HEC.
  • Providing financial assistance to needy students of the university from the vice-chancellor donation fund account. Also, providing scholarships to needy students from funds of HEC Islamabad, Usher & Zakat department, Government of Sindh.
  • Establishment of a state-of-the-art Advance Dental Clinic in Hyderabad.
  • Allowing 213 newly appointed medical officers to work as postgraduate students at university on a deputation basis, from the Health Department, Government of Sindh.
  • Establishment of the Pediatrics Endocrinology and Diabetic Clinic in the Pediatrics Department.
  • Establishment of the Diabetic Foot and Retinopathy Clinic at the ward along with a factory for shoe making by diabetic foot patients.
  • Signing an MOU with the Government of Sindh for the establishment of a Poison and Toxicology / DNA laboratory.
  • Signing & revising MOUs with international universities for joint research and academic programs:
  • Provision of water supply through proper water purification to university, hospital, and employee’s colony.
  • Establishment of the Institute of Dermatology at the old Trauma Centre, Hyderabad
  • Provision of electricity through an express feeder to the university campus, hotels, hospital, and employee colony.
  • Making the university a part of the Asian Consortium on Arsenic Research.
  • Making the university a part of the Global Consortium on Health Promotion.
  • Enabling international faculty to become part of the university’s Adjunct Faculty from foreign universities.
  • Establishment of a 200-seated library at Bilawal Medical College for boys.
  • Issuance of support funding (1682 m.) from the Higher Education Commission Islamabad for the establishment of the Research Institute of Endocrinology & Diabetes, a sports complex for girls, a tate-of-the-art examination center, a hostel for postgraduates (for males) at university, and the extension of the Medical and Research Centre, and Ophthalmology Department.

After successfully completing his 4-year tenure as Vice Chancellor at the university, Dr. Devrajani is currently working as a Professor, Dean of Postgraduate Studies, and Director of International Liaison, at the University of Modern Science (TUMH), in Tando Muhammad Khan. In his free time in the evenings, Dr. Devrajani runs his private clinic at Dr. Lines Doctors Line, Saddar, Hyderabad.

He is also a member of the Asia-Pacific Neuroendocrine Tumor Society, the Pakistan Society for the Study of Liver Diseases, the Thar Development Committee constituted by the Government of Sindh, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, the National Working Group for Diabetic Retinopathy, the Pakistan Obesity Society, the Cardio-metabolic Forum of Pakistan, the Oxford Academic Union and Rotary Club Hyderabad.

Social Works

Dr. Devrajani has always had an interest in social work, particularly in providing medical services to the underprivileged people of Sindh. In community services, he has organized and participated in over 130 free medical camps, including surgical eye camps in remote areas of Sindh Province.

Despite his hectic schedule, he still finds time to treat patients and organize free medical camps in remote villages of Thar. He is a down-to-earth person, a hardworking professional, and the best role model for young generations of physicians. May God bless him with more success, and blessings in his life.
