The gotra system is a lineage-based classification in Hinduism. In the gotra system, individuals belong to a specific gotra, which is often traced back to a legendary or mythical sage or rishi. People within the same gotra are considered to be descended from the same ancestor. Here a list of Suthar Caste Gotra is a compilation of various gotras within a particular community or caste in Hindu society. This gotra list serves as a record of the various lineages or clans that people are a part of, often tracing their roots to particular legendary or mythical individuals.

We can find People relating to the Suthar around the world with the majority of the population living in India. As per Vedas, they are descendants of Rishi Angira, one of the 7 sons (Saptrishis) of Lord Brahma. From Rishi Angira, many different new lineages evolved over the last thousands of years. After the passage of time, it became very difficult for people (e.g. Suthar) to know which lineage they belong to. So people felt a need to adopt a common system now known as the gotra system. In this article, we first discuss the origin of the term Gotra and secondly Gotra list of the Suthar community.

Origin of Gotra

As per etymology, the term “Gotra गोत्र” is a Sanskrit language word that means “cow pen” or “cow shelter”. We can trace and find evidence about the usage of the Gotra system for more than 3 millenniums. Pāṇini (6th-5th century BCE) who was a well-known Sanskrit philologist, grammarian, and revered scholar in ancient India, defines gotra in his book Grammatical Sutra (IV. 1. 162) as “the word gotra denotes the progeny (of a sage) beginning with the son’s son.” When a person tells another person “I am Vipparla-gotra”, he means that he traces his descent from the ancient sage Vipparla by unbroken male descent.

Suthar Caste Gotra List

According to the book ‘Shree Vishwakarma Gyankosh’ written by Shree Permanand J. Kessani, there are a total of 120 gotras in the Suthar caste and by today’s time, this number reached 126 in the gotra list. In the following, you can find the complete Suthar caste gotra listed below;
